Taking in the Moment

Beautiful Homemade Card

My beautiful homemade card!

Have you ever appreciated someone more after not being with him/her for a period of time?  It’s true what they say about the expression, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”.

I did not even realize it, until last Sunday evening when I came home from a 5 day business trip.  People go on trips all the time.  Well for me, the last time I was on an airplane, was five years ago… when you did not have to pay $25.00 for a piece of luggage to board. It really makes you want to just pack less and squeeze it all in to a carry-on bag (or Fed ex it).  Flying on a plane is NOT what I missed or appreciate.  What I truly missed was the beauty in the everyday moments with my husband and daughter.  It’s the little things that we don’t realize we take for granted until we are apart from them.

Moments like:

  • ·         My husband kissing me before he heads out for work
  • ·         My daughter saying “Good Morning Mommy” the moment she wakes up
  • ·         Celebrating the potty training successes (No more pull ups during the day… Yay!)
  • ·         Receiving a handmade craft with a big ‘cheesy’ smile
  • ·         My daughter singing and dancing to a bunch of songs like “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson or “Empire State of Mind” (both solo and duet by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z)

I am so involved in my daughter’s daily routine that I realized I was on autopilot at times.  Has this happened to you?

This trip rejuvenated my sense of accomplishment and motivation.  This past week, I have added more activities to our family life.  We have a ‘craft love’ in the afternoon for about 20-30 minutes about 3-4 times a week.  It can be as simple as making faces with stickers, putting a puzzle together or playing with play-doh.    With the weather getting warmer, helping my daughter ride her first bike around the block is great exercise for the both of us.  She smiles with sheer delight as she masters bike riding.  This is truly a special moment that I’m taking in.  I look forward to many more moments.

What moments are you taking in?

Here are a couple of my moments:

  1. Very nice Lynn! I like your idea of plans for activities – like craft love. I need to incorporate something like that into our summer plans.

  2. Love this post, Lynn, as it makes me think about all the moments in the day with my family that I cherish no matter how many times they happen! My little girl is now just out of Pull ups in the day time too, LOL! Keep writing!

  3. What a great tribute to being a mommy! A wonderful life of memories are the little things that happen. The big events will always be special, but the day-to-day quiet times are the ones that will put the smile on your face for years to come.
