Happy Birthday, America

United States Foam PuzzleWe are so blessed especially around this time of the year.  We are at home, enjoying the BBQ dinners, anticipating our garden to grow, and entertaining our newlywed houseguests who are in from Italy for their honeymoon.  They are getting a taste of the wonderful life we all enjoy here in America and are really enjoying it.

Now that the summer has arrived, I’m trying to come up with other preschool activities for my daughter.   We plan our play dates around camp and my business appointments.  To fill up an hour here or there, I have also come up with other activities.  Here is a list of other fun and educational activities that any preschooler would enjoy with a parent, caregiver, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin or neighbor:

  •  Watch the old and new/remake Disney princess movies.  Your town library is a great resource and/or record the princess movie featured on the Disney Junior channel over the weekends.   We just finished watching Cinderella, Tangled and Sleeping Beauty over the past several weeks.  We are awaiting Snow White to be available for pick up.  PS: Have boys?  My nephews really enjoyed Tangled (Princess Rapunzel), so there are plenty of other movies to choose from…like Tarzan too.
  •  Subscribe to Highlight’s High Five children’s magazine (ages 2-5).  This is a great gift to give any child.  My Mom gave this as a gift subscription for Christmas.  There are great interactive games and one of our favorite activities is Hidden Pictures, where we find all of the hidden objects.
  • Learning all of the state’s names, their shapes and where they fit on a puzzle.  There is a great foam puzzle of the United States for $1.00 in Staples.  This puzzle truly tests any adult’s memory of all the states location and more importantly opens up your child’s curiosity to all of the different shapes and colors.  It took several attempts for my daughter to get familiar with where all the states should be.  Here are a few pictures of this great geography introduction to our country.

Our next activity is to learn all of the State Capitals!    After that, my daughter will truly have an appreciation for our country and its ideals.  One song that I believe expresses the ideals of America is God Bless the U.S.A.

God Bless the U.S.A.

Original lyrics by Lee Greenwood

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time we stand and say.

That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

And I’m proud to be and American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

  1. Great ideas Lynn! I need more ideas to keep my bigger than pre-schoolers entertained when we aren’t at swim lessons and karate.

My pick would be America the Beautiful 🙂
